CLINICAL SCIENCES Differentiating Optic Disc Edema From Optic Nerve Head Drusen on Optical Coherence Tomography
نویسنده
چکیده
Methods: Optical coherence tomographic images from 60 subjects (20 with ODE, 20 with ONHD, and 20 control subjects) were assessed qualitatively and quantitatively. Qualitative criteria for ODE included an elevated optic nerve head with smooth internal contour and subretinal hyporeflective space (SHYPS) with recumbent “lazy V” pattern. Optic nerve head drusen displayed a “lumpybumpy” internal optic nerve contour and a rapid decline in SHYPS thickness. Quantitative comparisons included retinal nerve fiber layer and SHYPS thickness.

Differentiating optic disc edema from optic nerve head drusen on optical coherence tomography.
OBJECTIVE To assess optical coherence tomography in differentiating optic disc edema (ODE) due to papilledema and other optic neuropathies from optic nerve head drusen (ONHD). METHODS Optical coherence tomographic images from 60 subjects (20 with ODE, 20 with ONHD, and 20 control subjects) were assessed qualitatively and quantitatively. Qualitative criteria for ODE included an elevated optic ...

Optic disc drusen (ODD) are benign congenital anomalies of the optic nerve characterized by calcified hyaline bodies. While superficial drusen can be diagnosed easily during fundus examination, detecting buried drusen requires the use of additional imaging methods such as B-scan ultrasonography (USG), fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA), computed tomography (CT) and fundus autofluorescence (FA...

Assessment of the peripapillary nerve fiber layer and macular thickness can be determined in ophthalmology using optical coherence tomography (OCT). Decreased nerve fiber layer thickness and macular ganglion cell thickness in optic nerve ischemia have been correlated with visual field loss. OCT allows deep optic nerve head evaluation which helps understand pathophysiology of diseases. Furtherm...

INTRODUCTION Drusen of the optic nerve head are relatively benign and asymptomatic. They represent retinal hyaline corpuscles resulting from impaired axoplasmic transport of the retinal ganglion cells of optic nerve in front of the lamina cribrosa. They are usually detected accidentally, during a routine ophthalmologic examination. Most patients with optic disc drusen are not aware of the deter...

We report a 38-year-old man with a complaint of blurred vision in his right eye for the previous 5 days. He had bilateral optic disc drusen. Fluorescein angiography revealed multiple hyperfluorescent foci within temporal optic discs and temporal inferior arcade in late phase. Optical coherence tomography showed bilateral peripapillary serous detachment as well as right macular detachment. This ...
